COMPASSION

The light that penetrates the thick belly of darkness
and tears the grit off the bark of afro-ukpa*

The force that drives the noble breast of the queen
into the weary mouth of the abandoned orphan

The broad smile that’s cultivated, nurtured and sustained
On the dried face of humanity
